Experiences Concerning The "Best Buy" Extended Warranty Packages, Are They Trick Or What?

There I am sitting at the Geek Squad counter at the Best Buy in Coquitlam. I'm waiting around to pick up my PC which had been packed with Norton 360 and working out a matter with a content blocker. The sales rep is scratching down figures endeavoring to sell a couple next to me 3 personal computers for their kids for Christmas.

Ok Sir - he states. So you're looking at this total price $89 for Norton 360 $20 for recovery cd x 3, along with $30 each for a 2 year extended warranty deal. And so that's $90 TOTAL for the 2 years extended warranty which will cover ALL THREE PCs.

$30? Excuse me? Did I hear that correctly?

I lean in a little more so I could hear the pitch also. He repeats the figures back to the wife who happens to be estimating all of the totals and repeats $30 x 3 for a 2 year extended warranty for all three PCs.

What the heck? I disrupt the sales pitch.

Excuse me, sorry to interrupt, however did I just hear you say that a two year extended warranty is $30?

Certainly that is definitely right he claims. My manager approved that.

Really? I say. You imply the same lady that just incurred me $190 for a 3 year extended warranty?

I call the lady over and show her my bill. What type of business are you people working here? I say.

Therefore allow me to get this straight... A 2 year extended warranty for THREE PCs is $90 and a 3 year extended warranty for ONE personal computer is $190?

I ask to talk with the General Manager and the woman leaves for around 15 minutes.

She comes back and says that the General Manager has presented me a 50% bargain on my extended warranty package. I inquire to talk with him myself and she is gone for another 10 minutes. At this point I'm thinking to myself, these people are total scammers.

The General Manager comes over and then I put out my hand to shake his hand and then he looks at me with this strict look and draws an Arnold Schwarzenegger "HE MAN" grip and almost crushes my hand. He takes this really serious stance like we're likely to have a "scrap" or something.

What is this - intimidation tactics at the "Best Buy" in Coquitlam - I'm pondering?

He proceeds to offer me a $50 refund and gets into this volume ordering spiel and tells me that if I purchase 3 computers I will have this type of reduction as well. By this point - I'm pondering to myself, these guys are total cons. And so I proceed to the checkout to re-crunch the numbers in my head to try and figure exactly what has just gone down.

I call the General Manager once more and say - Did I hear you just provide me $50 off when you're Manager just presented me 50% discount?

$50.....50% - I must have gotten the figures confused he says.

I don't think so. I demand a full refund. All I could say is BUYER BEWARE!! If I hadn't witnessed it myself I would have never assumed it could happen for real.

What I believe to be the case is that the sales managers are prepared to eye up the buyer - look at their clothes, their footwear and their jewelry to know very well what they feel they might scam for each deal and what they can get away with. It seems that at the Best Buy in Coquitlam - a 2 year warranty can go for just $30 if you're a couple ordering 3 computers and if you're a business man wearing a Rolex, you can expect to pay $190 for 3 years. WOW!
